“My rug designs first emerged as drawings that referenced the patterning and textures I’ve explored in certain surfaces of my glass works. The designs evolved in two directions as I looked closely at pieces in my studio and produced spontaneous sketches in marker and ink. The first direction was a graphic patterning, built from concentric arrangements of lines. I envisioned a shimmering optical effect in which forms emerge and disappear upon viewing. The second was a rough grid, intersected with various diagonals and colors. It is intended to be abstract, a rendering of a deteriorated grid. Conversely, it can be interpreted as an aerial viewpoint, mapping, or simply a graphic interpretation of my glass surfaces.”
