Serban Ionescu

Serban Ionescu’s work spans across sculpture, painting, design, and architecture. With distinctive lines that emerge from his intensive drawing practice, vibrant use of color, and cartoonish gestures, Ionescu infuses his works with anthropomorphic and abstract shapes in a constant and intuitive play on shifting scale and form.

Ionescu was born in Romania in 1984 and moved to New York when he was ten years old. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute and was an adjunct professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s School of Architecture from 2010-2016. Since starting his successful artistic career, Ionescu has presented solo shows in the United States and abroad, including Antwerp and Tokyo.

Large-scale steel and aluminum sculptures like Chapel For An Apple, Tower For An Hour, and Smokey are Ionescu’s comeback to a post-architectural practice. He recently finished his first public sculpture at 33 feet tall, Room for A Shroom, in Zonhoven, Belgium. His book of colorful steel sculptures and furniture pieces, A THING ON A TABLE IN A HOUSE, was published in 2021, and his book of drawings, 148 OBLIQUE DRAWINGS, in 2023, both by Apartamento.

Ionescu lives and works in between Brooklyn and Paris, France.

” Vibrant colors and forms that oscillate between the anthropomorphic and the abstract. His work is based on an intuitive and continuous interplay of scales and shapes, with gestures that evoke the world of cartoons.”
