Woven Forms 2 – Ultra Dimensional Runner

Two distressed, gravity-defying rugs appear to be precariously clinging to the wall as if frozen in motion, at once resisting their fall and collapsing in on themselves. Their three-dimensionalityoffers multiple uses in this static state: each piece is a vanity with mirrors and shelving. Matte-dyed and undyed wool contrast with shimmering reflections and metallic threads, while pulled-out tufts suggest the rugs have been haphazardly disassembled, revealing unexpected interior layers and accidental forms.
“My furniture work is about changing expectations around functionality and the relationship between objects, users, and space. My textile work is about creating hybrid objects that convey narratives and metaphors with e motional resonance. These woven forms do a bit of all these things. They challenge where a carpet should be in space and how it should function, being at once rug, wall hanging, mirror, storage, and furniture. Ultimately, they are designed to suggest an emotional, metaphorical concept: the idea that even gravity can be unstable, with a roughed-up rug struggling to maintain its composure when down is up and being transformed because of that struggle.” – Luam Melake
